System requirements
Servers, database, network ports, browsers, and cameras for a Kalytera VMS installation.
Esta guía se publica en inglés.
Kalytera VMS runs on Windows Server (64-bit) and on Linux servers (Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS first), and operators work in a web browser, so nothing is installed on their computers. We deliver Kalytera VMS as part of your project and size the servers and storage with you. To see it working with your cameras, request a demo.
Servers
- Operating system: Windows Server, 64-bit (x64), or Linux, with Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS (x86-64) first.
- Runtime on Windows: nothing to install beforehand. Setup brings its own runtime and components.
- Rights on Windows: a Windows administrator account to run Setup.
- Recording storage: local fixed volumes on each recording server (Site Node). A Site Node prefers a volume other than the system drive when one is available.
One server can run the whole system with the Standalone profile, or a management server can work with several recording servers. See Install Kalytera VMS.
Linux: we deliver Kalytera VMS for Linux with your project as a package. It has the same Management, Site Node, and PostgreSQL roles as on Windows and uses the same ports.
Database
- Bundled (recommended): Setup installs PostgreSQL 18 on the management server and accepts database connections from that computer only.
- External: an existing PostgreSQL 18 server reached over TLS, with an empty UTF8 database and an installation account that has the CREATEROLE privilege.
Network
| Connection | Port |
|---|---|
| Browsers and recording servers to the management server (HTTPS) | TCP 7443 |
| Live video from the management server to browsers (WebRTC) | UDP 7443 |
| Recording servers to cameras | The camera's web port (HTTPS 443 or HTTP 80 by default) and RTSP (554 by default) |
| Cameras and recorders emailing alerts to a recording server (optional) | TCP 2525 |
- Recording servers connect out to the management server and need no inbound port for it.
- Browsers must reach the management server directly on UDP 7443, for example on the local network or over a VPN. Kalytera VMS does not use STUN or TURN relays.
- Camera discovery uses ONVIF WS-Discovery multicast on the recording server's local networks. Cameras on other subnets are added by address.
Browsers
Use a current Chromium-based browser, such as Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. Live video needs WebRTC. H.264 plays in every current browser, and H.265 plays where the viewer's browser and device can decode it. Saving exports larger than 256 MiB straight to disk needs a Chromium-based browser.
Cameras
- Axis cameras (VAPIX), Hikvision (ISAPI), Dahua (HTTP), and ONVIF cameras from other manufacturers.
- The native Hikvision and Dahua SDK integrations run on Windows servers only. Recording servers on Linux connect to Hikvision and Dahua cameras through ISAPI, HTTP, or ONVIF.
- NVRs and encoders with up to 64 channels per device.
- H.264 or H.265 streams. H.265 plays in Live and Playback where the viewer's browser can decode it; otherwise Live uses the camera's H.264 stream. Recording stores the camera's stream as it arrives, without re-encoding.
