Self-hosted video management for Axis, Hikvision, Dahua and ONVIF cameras
Kalytera VMS runs on your own Windows or Linux servers and keeps recordings on your storage. Operators watch, search and export video and handle alarms from a web browser.
Cameras and recorders
Native integrations use each manufacturer's own interface, so settings, events and streams come straight from the camera. Everything else connects over ONVIF.
- Native integrations for Axis (VAPIX), Hikvision (ISAPI) and Dahua
- ONVIF cameras and encoders
- Discovery on local networks with ONVIF WS-Discovery, or add by IP address
- Recorders and encoders with up to 64 channels per device
- Replace a camera and keep its recordings and history
Axis
VAPIX settings and events, camera analytics, PTZ presets.
Hikvision
ISAPI settings and events, camera analytics, playback from recorder archives.
Dahua
Native settings and events, motion, line and zone detection.
ONVIF
Streams, events, inputs and outputs from other manufacturers.
Live view and recording
Live video reaches the browser over WebRTC, relayed by the management server. Operators never connect to the cameras themselves, so cameras can stay on their own network.
- Views of 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 or 16 cameras and a 1+5 layout, private or shared
- Main or sub stream chosen automatically for each tile
- Digital zoom and full screen
- Continuous, scheduled, event-triggered and manual recording
- Pre-event buffer, so the seconds before an alarm are kept
- AES-GCM encryption at rest and an integrity check on every recording
- Retention by days, several storage volumes and retention holds
Playback and evidence
Search recordings on a timeline that shows exactly where there is video and where there isn't. Export the clip you need with a manifest that shows it hasn't been altered.
- Up to 8 cameras played back in sync
- Speeds from 0.25× to 8×, with thumbnails along the timeline
- Bookmarks for the moments worth keeping
- MP4 export with a manifest of SHA-256 hashes
- Playback from the archives of Hikvision recorders
Rules and alarms
Rules turn camera events, inputs and system health into actions. Alarms land in a shared queue where operators acknowledge them, assign them and add notes.
What can start a rule
- A camera going offline or coming back
- Tampering and video loss
- Intrusion areas being armed, disarmed or triggered
- Camera and Shelly inputs
- Recording and storage health
What a rule can do
- Raise an alarm with a severity
- Start recording
- Send an email
- Call a webhook signed with HMAC
- Switch an output or relay
- Move an Axis PTZ camera to a preset
- Arm or disarm an intrusion area
Rules can follow schedules, and you can test them safely before they go live.
Maps and floor plans
Upload a floor plan and place cameras and devices on it. Operators see live status and active alarms where they happen.
- Floor plans in PNG or JPEG
- Cameras, devices and shapes placed on the plan
- Live status and alarm state on every item
- Nested maps, from the whole site down to a single floor
Access, security and administration
Decide who sees what, keep a record of what each person did, and keep the system itself healthy.
Permissions
Allow and deny rules for each user, scoped to the whole installation, a site, an area, a group or a single device. A "who has access" view explains every grant.
Audit log
Configuration changes and operator actions are recorded in an audit log.
One site or many
Run everything on one server, or add recording servers that enroll with the management server and connect outbound.
Health
Device and server health at a glance, plus a support bundle for troubleshooting.
Integrations
Shelly relays and inputs, camera inputs and outputs, and signed webhooks to connect other systems.
Installation
On Windows, one installer sets up the management service, the recording service and a bundled PostgreSQL database. On Linux, the same services come as a package with your project.
Where it runs
Kalytera VMS runs on Windows Server (64-bit) and on Linux servers (Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS first). Operators only need a current web browser, and the Kalytera app brings the system to their phones.

The Kalytera app works with your Kalytera VMS installations and with Kalytera Cloud. Watch live video, play back recordings and handle alarms with push alerts, in English or Spanish. To sign in a phone to Kalytera VMS, scan a QR code from Configure and an administrator approves it.
