Axis Edge Connector
Get the Kalytera app for Axis cameras and recorders, enroll the connector in the portal, install it on the device, and add the sources it reports as cameras.
Contents
The Axis Edge Connector is a Kalytera app, Kalytera Edge Connector, that runs on an Axis camera or recorder and sends its video out to Kalytera. The site needs no open port and no port forward. A portal administrator enrolls the connector, and the installer puts the app on the device.
What you need
- An Axis camera or recorder that runs ACAP apps, with ARTPEC-6 or newer and AXIS OS 11.10 or later. Older ARTPEC-5 models cannot run the app.
- Outbound DNS, HTTPS and RTMPS from the device to Kalytera. Nothing inbound is needed. If the site firewall limits outbound traffic, ask Kalytera for the domains, addresses and ports to allow.
- An administrator account on the Axis device, to install the app.
The connector is a type in Add camera > Connection type. If Create enrollment cannot be selected, or the portal says the enrollment could not be prepared, the connector is not available on your service. Ask Kalytera.
Get the app
The app is not in an app store or in the portal. Ask Kalytera for it and give the device model and its AXIS OS version. Kalytera sends the installation file (.eap) built for that device. The file Kalytera supplies today is not signed through Axis, so you may need to turn on Allow unsigned apps on the device's Apps page.
Enroll the connector
- Go to Cameras > Add camera, choose Axis Edge Connector under Connection type, and select Enroll connector. You can also start from Cameras > Devices > Axis Edge Connectors.
- Enter a Connector name (optional, up to 200 characters) and select Create enrollment.
- Copy the Connector ID, Cloud API base URL and Bootstrap token. The token works once and stops working at the time shown under Expires.
- Select I copied the bootstrap token — continue. The connector's page opens.
Only administrators can enroll connectors. If the token expires before the app uses it, create a new enrollment and remove the unused one.
Install the app on the device
- Open the device's web page and go to Apps.
- Select Add app and upload the
.eapfile from Kalytera. - Open the settings of Kalytera Edge Connector. Enter the three values in
CloudApiBaseUrl,ConnectorIdandBootstrapToken, exactly as copied. - Set
ConnectEnabledtoyesand start the app.
The app enrolls, then reports its video sources. Never enter a stream URL or key on the device. To stop sending video, set ConnectEnabled to no.
Add the reported sources
- Open the connector: in Cameras > Devices, select Manage on Axis Edge Connectors, then Status & sources. Check that Last heartbeat and Inventory reported show a recent time.
- Choose the Site.
- Under Available to add, tick each source you want. Reported video shows its resolution, frame rate and H.264 profile.
- Enter a Camera name for each source (up to 100 characters).
- Leave Optional video selection empty to use the source's reported stream, or enter a width and height.
- Select Add selected cameras, or Create disabled for later.
Each source becomes its own camera and counts toward your camera limit. One connector can send up to 64 sources. Set recording on each camera as described in Recording, retention, and evidence.
Limits
- Video only: no audio.
- The app always sends H.264, whatever the camera's own stream settings. You do not need to change them.
- No Axis analytics or device events. AXIS Object Analytics, motion detection and other Axis events do not reach Kalytera.
- Kalytera analytics rules do not run on these cameras. The camera's Detection tab still shows, but a rule saved there never turns on.
- The app does not change the device's existing stream profiles.
Troubleshooting
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Waiting for registration | The app is running, ConnectEnabled is yes, the three values match, and the device can reach Kalytera over HTTPS. If the token has expired, enroll again. |
| No sources under Available to add | Wait for the app to report its sources, then reload the page. |
| Offline or Degraded | The device's power and network, and outbound RTMPS from the site. |
Remove a connector
In the list of Axis Edge Connectors, open Remove Axis Edge Connector under the connector and select Review and remove. A camera with footage or alarm history is retired; the others are deleted. The app stops connecting at once. To use the device again, enroll a new connector and enter its values in the app.
