Sites, areas, and groups
Describe where cameras and devices are with sites, areas, and groups, so permissions, schedules, and camera connection security follow them.
Contents
Sites, areas, and groups describe where your cameras and devices are. Kalytera VMS uses them for permission scopes, site time zones, camera connection security, and virtual alarm panels. You set them up in Configure > Maps & relationships, under Sites & relationships.
What you need
- The Configure sites and relationships permission.
- The cameras and devices you want to place. See Add cameras.
Sites, areas, and groups
| Item | What it is |
|---|---|
| Site | A location with a name and a time zone. Schedules follow the site's time zone. |
| Area | A part of one site, such as a room. Areas can be nested within their site. |
| Group | A flat set of resources, such as all entrance cameras. A group can span sites. |
Each camera or device belongs to at most one site and one area, and to any number of groups.
Set up the structure
- Go to Configure > Maps & relationships and open Sites & relationships.
- In Sites, areas & groups, create your sites with their name and time zone, the areas within each site, and the groups you need.
- In Resource placement, put each camera and device in its site and area, and add it to groups.
- Select Save changes. Changes in every section are kept as one draft and saved together.
New cameras can be placed as you add them, with the Site field of Add camera.
Relate resources to each other
Security context links resources for a purpose:
- Verification video: the cameras that verify a device. They are in order, and the first one is the primary camera.
- Input reporting: the inputs that report a device.
- Camera monitoring: the cameras that watch a device.
- Output operation: the outputs that operate a device.
Further links are in Advanced relationships. Relationships never grant permissions.
Use them in permissions
A role can allow or deny a permission for one site, area, or group instead of the whole installation. See Roles and sessions and Users and permissions.
Remove a site
Removing a site takes its cameras and devices out of the site; it does not delete them. Kalytera VMS refuses to remove a site while a role uses it, while it has its own camera connection security, or while a virtual alarm panel belongs to it.
Good to know
- Sites, areas, and groups do not organize maps or filter Live, Playback, or Alarms. Maps are built separately; see Maps.
- An area here is a place, such as a room. An area of a virtual alarm panel is something else: the part of the panel that is armed and disarmed. See Virtual alarm panels.
